This is a very well managed, friendly club led by Jason. By learning a traditional, authentic Japanese martial art my son is not only learning the physical practice of self defence but also mentally he is learning more about himself, self control and self discipline. My son is truly inspired and his self confidence has increased tenfold. The members are all so welcoming and they all have great respect for each other, pity this isn’t compulsory to learn in schools!

Jujutsu

Traditional Japanese Jujutsu is also taught at the Kinkan Dojo.
Jujutsu is a martial art used to defend and control an enemy using unarmed techniques. This means Jujutsu is a true self defence system, not a system for becoming strong or hurting anyone. Jujutsu practise enables the student to develop a strong spirit which can guide the student through dangerous situations.
Jujutsu was developed and studied by Japan's warrior class, the Samurai. The Samurai traditionally learned and mastered yari (spear), katana (sword), yumi (bow & arrow) and bajutsu (horsemanship). However they also learned kumiuchi (unarmed techniques), so that if their weapon was broken or lost on the battlefield they could continue to defend themselves.
This traditional martial art has influenced the development of many other martial arts systems, including Aikido, Judo and some schools of Karate. Unfortunately today very few Jujutsu schools outside of Japan practise what could be considered authentic Jujutsu, having lost the connection with their Japanese roots.
Jujutsu training at the Kinkan Dojo encompasses the following areas:
- Kansetsu waza - joint locking techniques
- Osaekomi waza - pinning methods
- Atemi waza - striking techniques
- Nage waza - throwing techniques
- Shime waza - choking methods
Certification in Jujutsu at the Kinkan Dojo follows a kyu/dan system, and registered students also have the opportunity to test and gain certification in the Ryu-Ha.
