Master Teachers: Sato Kinbei Sensei  
 
Grandmaster Sato Kinbei Sensei was born in 1926 in Fukushima Prefecture. He started training in martial arts at 11 years of age with his family art of Daiwa Ryu Jujutsu, and went on to earn Menkyo Kaiden in various martial arts, including:
  • Daito ryu
  • Takeda ryu
  • Araki Shin ryu
  • Yagyu Shingan ryu
  • Asayama Ichiden ryu
  • Isshin ryu and
  • Tenjin Shinyo ryu
He became a board member of the Japanese Classical Budo Federation (Kobudo Shinkokai).
 
He also graduated from Tohoku National University as a Doctor/Professor, and worked as a Doctor in his own Hospital in Tokyo.
After the Second World War he became a student of Takamatsu Sensei, and in 1957 was awarded Menkyo Kaiden for Hontai Kukishin ryu and Hontai Takagi Yoshin ryu (Ishitani line).
Sato Sensei also started learning Chinese martial arts in 1956 and was the personal student of Li Zi Ming, a famous Bagua stylist.
He was the first Japanese to become a 4th generation Grandmaster (Denjin) in the Chinese martial art Hakkesho (Pa-Kua).
Upon the death Fumio Akimoto in 1962, Takamatsu was obligated to find a new successor for the Gikan ryu of which Akimoto had been Grandmaster.
Takamatsu chose Sato Sensei to carry on the Gikan ryu and awarded him the title and scrolls as the new grandmaster of the art in 1963.
Sato Sensei was a well known and very skilful martial artist in Japan and was a self-defence adviser at the Police University.
It was Grandmaster Sato Kinbei Sensei who introduced Grandmaster Ueno Takashi Sensei to Grandmaster Takamatsu Toshitsugu Sensei.
In 1989 Grandmaster Sato Sensei passed on the Grandmasterships for Hontai Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Hontai Kukishin Ryu and Gikan Ryu to his student Shoto Tanemuara Sensei.
At the age of 73 Grandmaster Sato Kinbei Sensei passed away in hospital of pneumonia, on 21 January 1999.
